Rust is getting more primitive

The staff at Facepunch has released an add-on for their survival MMO action game Rust. This update is called Primitive. But it is not about simplifying the rules of combat or gameplay, but about adding medieval entourage to the game. Heroes can now wear armor, arm themselves with swords and spears, hide behind ancient metal gates during sieges, shoot enemies with crossbows and build barricades with stakes. We tell you more about the changes in the popular project.

What was added to Rust in February 2025?

"Primitive" addition pleases fans of chivalric romance, but takes the action not in the past, but in the distant future, when knowledge of high technology has already been lost. And since this is the case, in battles will be useful techniques of the dark Middle Ages. You can weld armor from sheets of steel and rebar, build a shield from boards, arm yourself with an axe and go to storm someone's base. Mini crossbows, grenades made of bean cans and spear throwers were also added to the arsenal. Both in defense and offense you can build barricades, catapults, ballistas and siege towers, spending on them, of course, junk like corrugated board and old tires.

The new mode fundamentally changes gameplay, as it adds a real castle siege - with preparation for defense and construction of siege equipment. It's quite different from quick raids with grenade launchers and helicopters. However, even in Primitive, you can increase your movement speed with horses and add killing power to your attacks by getting a medieval assault rifle decorated with gilding and jewels.
