Online games about the Middle Ages

There is a holiday on the street of knights' quarrels fans, because Warhorse company announced the second part of Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Soon we will find out whether brave Indřich will take revenge on the villains, whether he will get out of the mud to the princes and whether he will find his destiny on the expanses of the XV century Bohemia. And who would like to get the same entourage, but in MMO format, look forward to the release of Pax Dei. It is even surprising that with the public's keen interest in the Middle Ages, there are not so many quality online games on this topic. Nevertheless, we have selected a few interesting projects that you can play while waiting for the sandbox from Mainframe Industries and Kingdom Come sequel.

For Honor

If you like Kingdom Come fencing for some reason, Ubisoft's MMO-action game Hor Honor will give you similar feelings from fights. Here you also need to attack and put blocks on certain vectors, reacting to exactly the same targeted lunges of the enemy, but the directions for blows in the game are three, not five, which simplifies the task. And the third-person view seems to many gamers more convenient for fighting with cold weapons (just as the first-person perspective is suitable for shooting). At the same time, For Honor offers a choice of swordsmanship styles - from the stately slowness of armored knights to the acrobatic mobility of light fighters.
The main activity in the game is battles of various formats, from noble duels to two teams piling up in a desmatched match. Point capturing, fortress storming, and fighting for influence on the global map as guilds create their own kingdoms are also represented. But the most entertaining thing about the game is that it has a full-fledged story. It is a fantasy on the theme of Valhalla, where warriors get after death. That's why there are European knights, Vikings, Japanese samurai, and even Aztecs. Of course, the action movie costs money, but its cost by today's standards is quite small, and it looks, despite the eight-year age, very decent - many more modern online games have worse graphics.

Mordhau

It is worth admitting that not all fans of the Middle Ages will like a match where knights fight with samurai. Mordhau is a more down-to-earth game in this sense: the warriors here are purely European, and the scenery is free of the giantism peculiar to fantasy. Although the conflict and locations are fictional, we see in the game such a medieval battle as it is shown, for example, in the movies. Swords, spears, halberds, bows, crossbows, maces - the whole arsenal from museum expositions dedicated to the Hundred Years War is used. But the main feature of Triternion's slasher is that it is made by fans for fans. Fans of Chivalry and other similar projects decided to release their own version of the knights' fight - and they got a real hit.
Before the battle, everyone can build their own character in the editor, using different armor, weapons and appearance. That is, there are no pre-created classes, and success on the battlefield depends only on personal skills. If you want to control a heavy lathnik with a halberd or a bard strumming his guitar during a battle, you're welcome to do so. In Mordhau there is a single mode for training and multiplayer for 64 participants, as well as foot and horse battles, military vehicles, construction of fortifications, primitive grenades - the whole space for tactics. Realism points are added by the cruelty setting, which, however, can be turned off at any time if you don't like the sight of blood and severed limbs.

Conqueror's Blade

And this game combines several genres at once. Here you control a medieval warrior, as if in an MMORPG, and also lead support units. But there is also a global strategic level, where Houses (guilds) fight among themselves for the territories of a fictional kingdom. The fact that the battles in Conqueror's Blade are inspired by real historical events and battles is also interesting. The class of your character depends on the weapon you choose - you can, for example, fight with sword, spear, paired blades or muskets. The choice of modes also gives a chance to deploy tactical ingenuity: there is "Siege" with storming fortresses, using battering rams and trebuchets, as well as team battles 15 on 15, PvE-combat ("Camping") and duels in the arena.
Although the game does not have magic, it reminds For Honor in part by the fact that there are different cultures represented here, including Chinese troops of the Ming Dynasty, which can easily meet on the same battlefield with French knights or warriors from Byzantium. The participation of extras is also not new, but here you can give elementary commands to the bot squads - like the direction of attack or holding positions. And also they are different. That is, the player has to think tactically: send some of them forward, and leave others in the rear to cover the attackers. Finally, an important advantage of Conqueror's Blade is that the game is available for free. Although it does not cancel the payments for those who would like to use the bonuses of a premium account.

Life is Feudal: MMO

The project of LTG company belongs to the games with a complicated fate. This MMORPG was paid, then it became free, but with access to premium by subscription, then its servers were shut down, only to be restarted soon. And if you go to its page in Steam now, it is easy to see that you can install it on your computer for free. All of these evolutions, coupled with software bugs, have given Life is Feudal a bad reputation. Although its scope and ambitions are amazing: here everyone gets into a harsh medieval world, where you need to survive, mining, war, building and climb the ranks of the feudal hierarchy to become one of the rulers of the kingdom. And the adventure is designed with an emphasis on realism - no magic for you.
The level of freedom of action in the game becomes clear already at the stage of character creation, the type of weapons depends on the gender, and the occupation - on the chosen race. Further the hero gets to the map with the area of 21x21 kilometers, where you can do anything, as long as it contributes to survival and gaining experience. Grass fibers come in handy for weaving ropes, wood is used to make a tree, wild apples provide food for the first time - everything is done according to the canons of the genre. But there are two nuances. Firstly, the game is equipped with a system of changing the landscape: nothing prevents you from decorating the homestead the way you like. Secondly, the progression is built in such a way that everyone can find their place in society, whether it is military command or peaceful crafts.

Myth of Empires

Myth of Empires is a newer medieval survival game than Life is Feudal. That's why the experience is more or less the same, but it is better combed technically and contains more content. However, the virtual world is populated with representatives of several civilizations, including China, Greece and Egypt, and you will have to join one of them to get from the lowest to the top of power. Mining resources in valleys, forests and islands, you can build your home and practice one of over a thousand crafts. Of course, it's easier to build an empire in the company of friends.
The game features realistic time of day and weather changes, as well as a selection of biomes for a greater variety of habitats for your character. The gameplay is based on the "sandbox" principle: you can go wherever you want and do whatever your heart desires. During the adventures of the hero await monsters and dungeons, as well as wild animals, which will not be difficult to tame to make, for example, a brown bear assistant in battle and peaceful life. It is allowed to attract to your side and fighters under the control of artificial intelligence, collecting from them their army. The developers especially emphasize hundreds of weapons and mass battles with the participation of armies of different users.

Medieval Dynasty

This game, which collects only positive reviews in Steam, has one important feature. Yes, here you also have to chop wood, chisel stone, build and survive, but in this case the gamer controls not a hero, but a whole medieval dynasty - in the manner of Crusader Kings strategies. However, you start, of course, with one character, as in other RPGs with survival elements. A poor man cradles pears, extracts the first resources and tries to fight hunger and thirst. You can't even think about overseas feats in such conditions - here you would have to sow a field in time and hide from a bear in a hut. Medieval Dynasty really emphasizes the pastoral rather than the chivalric side of the story, because your dynasty begins in a rural community.
But that doesn't mean that the villagers are completely defenseless, because in the game any little thing can kill you - from a poisonous berry to an angry boar. That's why the characters should be pumped up. Progression here is organized on the same principle as in The Elder Scrolls: the more often you do something, the better it turns out in the future. And the strength of peasants, as it happens, is in their unity: the cooperative mode allows users to survive in a team, to go into the thicket on the largest beasts and to build entire villages, not a separate base. The developers paid a lot of attention to personal relationships. For example, to continue the family, the hero must find a couple - and then the wife will not only help in the household, but also heal wounds.

Stronghold Kingdoms

Although the Middle Ages is a popular topic, there are not so many role-playing games and action movies about this era, and even fewer good strategies. Especially in MMO format. Fade hope does not give Stronghold Kingdoms - online strategy in real time, where the user acts as a lord who owns the land and castle. The first will have to cultivate with the help of peasant labor, and the second - to defend against bandits and neighboring feudal lords. After all, on the server along with you are other users who also do not mind to establish their own kingdom. It is the interaction of gamers on the global map deserves special praise and provides the game popularity even more than a dozen years after its release.
Kingdoms looks unassuming - it is a tribute to the original series of two-dimensional strategies Stronghold. But the gameplay is made according to all the canons of the genre. There is an economy with resource collection, production and trade. Scientific development is represented by a tree of technologies with each branch pumping - you can, for example, improve engineering, art or math in one section, and in another prepare your army for new challenges. There are, respectively, military actions and diplomacy, so that users unite into clans and states, and not just squabble among themselves. The strength of the kingdom depends on the lords serving it, so everyone gets experience for their actions and grows in levels themselves, expanding their own holdings. It is also important that the game is available for free.

Reign of Guilds

If you're interested in economics, diplomacy and warfare in a medieval setting, but would like a first-person view and better graphics than Stronghold Kingdoms, then Reign of Guilds will come to the rescue. This is a new MMORPG - it was released in April 2024, so it looks great. Your hero together with other inhabitants of the server operates in the open world, where you need to make friends and defeat enemies. But no one requires you to build, mine and grow tomatoes - everything here revolves around the interaction of individual players and guilds. Simulation of taxes, banks and feudal system with titles is available.
Despite this serious approach, the developers from Atlant Games allowed spells in the game along with swords and bows. On the other hand, the action takes place in a fictional kingdom called Dvorran, so why not add some magic? Those who don't want to cast spells are free to use cold weapons - fights here are done in the manner of Kingdom Come, but there are no predetermined directions for attacks, and opponents are both computer characters and heroes under the control of players. However, you don't need to be a skilled swordsman to seize power - you just need to manage your lands wisely and be in good standing with your guild.
