Usually the artifact is guarded by a demon. You will have to deal with him, because he won't give anything away in a good way. In order to defeat the demon you will get the jewels. Collect them, only after you accumulate the required amount, the scale will tip in the right direction and the demon will be defeated.

Collecting artifacts is not the only task. You also need to destroy the blocks. The easiest way to do this is to form groups of similar items close to the stone slabs. There should be at least three items in a group, or better yet, more. Once you pick up the necessary line, the charms will break and the barrier will disappear. In some cases, it is easier to accumulate energy for bonuses than to make attempts to destroy the slab in a place that is closed for free access.
