The authors of The Elder Scrolls Online responded to fans

Game developers often collect feedback from ordinary gamers to subsequently make corrections to gameplay. At the same time, few dare to voice criticism in public. Nevertheless, Bethesda specialists regularly publish issues of the Developer Deep Dive column so that fans of MMORPG in the universe «The Elder Scrolls» are aware of what the studio employees are working on and what changes to expect in the near future. The other day, an open letter about hero classes was published — let's discuss it in more detail.

What is currently happening with character classes in TESO?

According to developers, what makes heroes in The Elder Scrolls Online unique are the sources of their power, including the weapons they use. One, for example, relies on cunning, thus using special blades for delivering strikes from stealth, the second achieves victory through brute force, the third deals damage gradually, and the fourth strikes rarely but painfully. Nuances define the differences between specializations of Tamriel's inhabitants, while also making them useful members of squads. And here it is important to maintain balance so that one skill does not outweigh another, as indeed the lion's share of criticism from ordinary users is devoted to such questions. Specifically to solve balance problems, subclasses were introduced and skills were decentralized within class builds. In practice, this means that one cannot obtain the best techniques by leveling up a single branch alone.

Thus, at later stages of character development, characters will be divided into two camps: one will include representatives of «pure classes», engaged in leveling skills characteristic of their role, while the other will contain proponents of flexible configuration — they will delve into the subclass system. Such transformation, as stated by Bethesda, lies at the foundation of upcoming game improvements. If the published plan is to be believed, the first balance adjustments will affect Dragonknights. Then it will be the turn of Wardens, Sorcerers, Templars, Nightblades, Necromancers, and Arcanists.
