Autumn is traditionally rich in high-profile shooter releases. Battlefield’s numbered sixth installment is already out, with ARC Raiders and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 on the way, but all those games cost money—and quite a lot. That makes it all the more interesting that staff at Electronic Arts have decided to challenge rivals’ Warzone and have unveiled a free «battle royale» set in the «Battlefield» universe. Here you’ll find destructible environments, rides in every kind of armored vehicle, and modern graphics. Formally this «battle royale» is part of «Six», but in reality it’s available as a separate client—there’s no need to buy the main game. The action takes place at Fort Lindon in Southern California—a classified military base surrounded by scenic beaches and urban sprawl. The ring around the combat zone is a wildfire (typical for this part of the U.S.), so heroes have to fight inside a gradually shrinking ring of flame until only one fighter or squad remains. Bear in mind that the shooter offers several modes right away, and Battle Royale is just one of them.

The next firefight format is Gauntlet. Several groups compete here too, but they race to complete specific objectives. Portal, meanwhile, gives free rein to creativity: you don’t just fight, you also craft your own fun—be it races in military choppers or tank derbies. Even though the new release is free for everyone, reviews so far are mixed. The most common complaints are long server queues, poorly tuned audio, technical glitches, and blind imitation of Activision’s Warzone.
