Looking forward to a new Warcraft? Phil Spencer on the future of Blizzard
It's no longer a secret that Microsoft intends to buy Activision Blizzard for nearly $70 billion. And while this grandiose deal is being worked out, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer discussed with Wired journalists the 25th anniversary and the recent success of the relaunched Age of Empires series, and at the same time talked about the wishes regarding the newly acquired studios.
What we learned from the interview about the Age of Empires
Spencer has long established himself as "in charge of games at Microsoft": he speaks at trade shows and is not without success in the development of the Xbox division. So his opinion is usually listened to. And since the conversation with Wired about strategy, it did not go without mentioning the development of Blizzard, which will soon come under the wing of the Redmond corporation. Phil, of course, said that he does not interfere in the creative plans of the studios. But at the same time he noted the importance of Star Craft and Warcraft for the development of both the RTS genre and cyber sports.
That's why the Xbox executive intends to talk to employees at Blizzard, Activision and King Studios about their legacy to give it a boost for the future. And the thought of a full-fledged revival of the Star Craft and Warcraft series, as Microsoft did with Age of Empires, inspires Spencer now, as he has spent many hours playing those games in his time. However, the interview does not reveal any specific plans - so far it's just a matter of wishes.
