Dual Universe server shutdown approaches

The authors of the space MMO from Novaquark announced the shutdown of official servers on August 27. However, the game itself about travels and battles in interstellar space will continue to exist — gamers are invited to join other private worlds or create their own. No one explains exactly what caused this decision, but it's logical to assume that the project, launched via Kickstarter several years ago, isn't doing too well.

More about the changes in Dual Universe

According to the developers, they are sharing this news with a heavy heart. Nevertheless, all current users will retain access to the game, and the client will remain available for installation. The myDU service is being replaced with OpenDU, shifting multiplayer support onto the shoulders of fans — by the end of summer, only private servers like the one created by the Obsidian Ant team will remain operational. The entire project, according to Novaquark's plans, will transition to an open-source license. Gamers are specifically warned to exchange or convert their DAC — coupons representing in-game currency — by the 27th of next month. Refunds for unused paid subscriptions will be processed in the first two weeks of autumn.

If you're unaware, the game is based on voxel technology that allows altering planetary landscapes and applying detailed damage models to equipment. The gameplay focuses on PvP and exploring the virtual universe. The plot involves a neutron star destroying all life in the Solar System, forcing humanity to find a new home in distant corners of the galaxy — with heroes traveling through space in their ships to achieve this goal. After the discontinuation of official multiplayer support, participating in this odyssey will cost an amount equivalent to $35.
