Break me completely: what caused the Dark Souls server shutdown

Recently there was information on Reddit forum, that the multiplayer of Dark Souls III allows hackers to break the computer of player in order to steal the data, install viruses and even to disable the whole PC. In response, FromSoftware, the company responsible for developing the role-playing action game, shut down the servers of Dark Souls III, Dark Souls II and Dark Souls: Remastered.

An interesting feature of the Souls series is its multiplayer. One player can literally invade another's session to assist in a monster battle or, conversely, fight in PvP mode. This mechanic, designed to diversify the passage of the story campaign, was very dangerous. Reddit users raised the alarm, and later the theory was confirmed by the attack on the blogger The_Grim_Sleeper. While he was streaming Dark Souls III, a hacker made the game through a vulnerability in the code to crash on the desktop. Although the FromSoftware employees didn't answer the letters from the worried fans, they decided to turn off the servers to avoid further problems.
This was reported by the official Dark Souls Twitter account. In addition to the servers of the third part, the developers have disabled multiplayer in the second part and the remake of the first. The FromSoftware apologized for the inconvenience and promised to fix the vulnerability as soon as possible. Whether there is a similar flaw in the studio's new game, Elden Ring, is still unknown.
