Marathon's creators talk about characters

March 2026, when Bungie's extraction shooter Marathon is set to release, is getting closer. Therefore, the developers are sharing details about the announced action game. Specifically — they're talking about what character classes (runners) will be available at launch. Currently, there are seven in total, each with their own characteristics: there are both attacking fighters and stealthy ones, as well as a medic and a thief. This class division is an unusual solution for the genre, so the information from the action game's creators deserves special attention.

More about the runners' properties in Marathon

As some already know, in the game you take on the role not of living astronauts on an alien planet, but of their clones, created specifically to reduce risks in exploring a distant and hostile world. But they are designed to be different so that a group of gamers can assemble a versatile squad to solve tactical tasks across a wide spectrum. The list includes, for example, the 'Demolisher' class — a well-protected fighter who shields themselves and attacks enemies with rockets. The 'Scout' uses echolocators and special drones to detect hidden enemies, while the 'Assassin' sneaks up on targets in camouflage or a smoke cloud — allowing for sudden strikes. Additionally, the character can withstand falls from any height.

The 'Vandal' is equipped with mobility and the ability to knock back opponents with a shot. The 'Thief' has excellent vision and scout drones — with this arsenal, it's easy to find and collect all the loot in the location. 'Triage' heals teammates, though not always with their own hands, but sometimes with the help of helper robots. Finally, there's the RUK — this archetype is considered the most accessible. It has no obvious advantages or disadvantages, so it serves as something like a 'wildcard' in Escape from Tarkov. It can be taken into a match to avoid risking equipment and achieved progression.
